DEPRESSION THERAPY IN NYC

We all feel sad or down from time to time.

Depression is when "time to time" becomes "all the time"

It can be tough to know if you’re suffering from depression or just “feeling down.” While your symptoms may vary from mild to severe, the common thread is that they last at least two weeks.

During that time, you may notice that your mood dictates how you act or what you do. You may lose interest in what you used to enjoy, or struggle to find the motivation to do the things you need to do (go to work, personal hygiene, maintain relationships). Here are a few more common symptoms of depression:

  • Feeling sad or depressed
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Change in appetite (increase or decrease)
  • Trouble falling asleep or trouble waking up
  • Loss of energy or fatigue
  • Feeling worthless
  • Slowed movement or speech
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

How is depression treated?

The good news is that depression is one of the most treatable mental disorders! With CBT therapy, our goal is to teach you to understand your depressive thoughts and how they lead to depressive behaviors.

When we are depressed, we have a metaphorical black cloud that prevents us from seeing things in a neutral way.

Through therapy, we will help you evaluate your thoughts to determine which ones are distorted, adjust your thought patterns, and ultimately change your behaviors.

For instance, let’s imagine that you’re at home and see your friend post a photo of herself having fun with your best friend. If you’re suffering from depression, your first thought might be, “why don’t they want to hang out with me?!” Soon after, you find yourself feeling alone and distancing yourself from both friendships.

With CBT therapy, our goal is to determine the validity of those thoughts — and learn to see them in a more neutral way. For example, “my friends hanging out without me has nothing do do with their feelings for me.” These changes can make us feel significantly better and through our work, we will teach you how best to evaluate your thoughts!

Do I need medication?

While medication is not required, some people respond positively to anti-depressants. Before making that big decision, we will work together to understand if that’s the best course for you.

If you’re already taking medication for depression, we will collaborate with your psychiatrist to ensure you’re getting the best treatment from all angles. If you don’t currently have a psychiatrist, we can work together to find the right one for you.
