Low self-esteem in action

Low self-esteem can manifest itself in many different ways. For example, you might put something off until later because you “can’t deal with doing it now.” Or, you may engage in activities you later regret … just because you thought it would “make you feel better later.” For example:

  • Substance use
  • Not studying for a test or writing a paper
  • Dropping out of school
  • Engaging in risky sexual relationships
  • Self harm
  • Unhealthy eating patterns

Low self-esteem often makes you doubt your self-worth or feel like you aren’t good enough. This can prevent you from all sorts of “regular life activities,” including:

  • Applying for a job
  • Keeping in touch with friends
  • Going to college
  • Dating
