Low self-esteem in action
Low self-esteem can manifest itself in many different ways. For example, you might put something off until later because you “can’t deal with doing it now.” Or, you may engage in activities you later regret … just because you thought it would “make you feel better later.” For example:
- Substance use
- Not studying for a test or writing a paper
- Dropping out of school
- Engaging in risky sexual relationships
- Self harm
- Unhealthy eating patterns
Low self-esteem often makes you doubt your self-worth or feel like you aren’t good enough. This can prevent you from all sorts of “regular life activities,” including:
- Applying for a job
- Keeping in touch with friends
- Going to college
How can therapy help?
The first thing we’ll do is help you identify the harmful thought patterns associated with low self-esteem.
From there, we’ll work together to change your unhelpful thinking patterns … and create new behaviors to help rebuild your self-esteem over time. You’ll learn how to break the cycle of feeling badly about yourself and learning new ways to boost your self-worth, whether that’s stopping maladaptive behaviors or starting healthy alternatives.
We want to prevent low self-esteem from feeling like it’s controlling your life. You are worthy and good enough, and we want to help you believe that too.
